They Had Practiced Building a Stretcher. Then a Hiker Got Hurt.

Students from Presbyterian Ladies' College in Armidale, Australia had been practicing wilderness rescue techniques when an injured hiker nearby needed exactly what they had learned.

The students at Presbyterian Ladies' College in Armidale, Australia had been practicing makeshift stretcher construction as part of their training — a skill that felt theoretical, until it wasn't.

When a hiker in the area was injured and needed to be carried out, the students were there. They built a stretcher from what they had and carried the hiker to safety.

"To have that trick up their sleeve, and to have practiced it, provided such a good sense of achievement," said 11th grader Stephanie Blake, who was among those involved in the rescue.

Their classroom preparation had become a real rescue — and the hiker went home because a group of young women had taken their training seriously.
