The Dog Named Hero Who Lived Up to His Name

When his owner fell into a muddy ditch in Alberta, Canada, an Akita named Hero spent two frigid nights fighting off coyotes and keeping him alive — until he found a way to get help.

In Taber, Alberta, Canada, a man found himself trapped in a muddy ditch in temperatures as cold as minus 17 degrees Celsius. He could not get out.

For two days and two nights, his Akita — named Hero — never left his side.

Hero kept his owner warm through the freezing nights and fought off coyotes that threatened them both. When a person walked nearby, Hero charged at them aggressively — not out of hostility, but to get their attention. The person contacted the Taber Police Service.

Officers arrived and found the man in the ditch, cold and unable to move, with Hero standing guard.

Both survived.

After the story spread, a GoFundMe campaign was set up by the shelter caring for Hero while his owner recovered. The community raised $3,000 to cover Hero's veterinary bills.

Hero had earned it.
